Is fasting equivalent to dieting?

Hello friends. We are back on Talk back Thursday with a new topic which actually arose in my mind when one of my friend suggested me a solution for weight loss which was “fasting”. Huh. Many of us actually did believe that dieting is just equivalent to fasting. right? Fasting is an age-old practice, often done for religious reasons, but fasting for weight loss is still capturing the public imagination.


So, is fasting a good idea for your health?Possibly, or possibly not! Every day, organs such as the liver, kidney, and spleen work to remove and neutralize toxins from the body to keep our cells healthy. “When you fast, you eliminate input of additional toxins from food,” says Dr. Katz, “and there is a potential biological benefit to that.”It’s true that fasting — that is, eating little to no food — will result in weight loss, at least in the short term. But the risks far outweigh any benefits, and ultimately, fasting can cause more harm than good.

Not all fasts are created equal. Some can be perfectly safe, such as medical fasts supervised by a physician. Religious and cultural fasts are typically undertaken as an act of devotion, last from 24-48 hours, and are not intended to promote weight loss.But high-risk people, the elderly, anyone with a chronic disease, pregnant women, and children are advised against any type of fasting.The real danger lies in staying on the fast for prolonged periods.


Keep in mind that the initial weight lost on a fast is primarily fluid or “water weight,” not fat. And when you go back to eating, any lost weight usually gets a return ticket back. Not only do most people regain weight lost on a fast, they tend to add a few extra pounds because a slower metabolism makes it easier to gain weight.

Here’s how your body reacts when you stop feeding it:

  • When you eat, your digestive system breaks down carbohydrates into the sugar glucose, the body’s major source of energy. Glucose is absorbed from the digestive tract into the blood, which then travels to your body’s cells to provide them with fuel.
  • If you haven’t eaten recently, the supply of glucose in your blood drops and your body turns to stored glucose, called glycogen, for energy.
  • Once the glycogen is used up, your body begins to burn fat and muscle stores to make its own glucose to fuel your cells.
  • After a few days without eating (which experts don’t recommend) your body kicks into ketosis mode, meaning you burn fat as the primary source of fuel, in order to spare muscle. You will lose weight in the form of body fat. However, ketosis also makes your blood will also become more acidic, and can cause bad breath, fatigue, and other unpleasant symptoms; long-term, it can lead to kidney and liver damage.


A study was conducted to check the effects of food deprivation on concentration and perseverance. So it was examined that food deprivation had no such effects on concentration but drastically affected perseverance.Many things interrupt people’s ability to focus on a task: distractions, headaches,  also food!

So let me just give you a gist and then you decide if its good or bad for us.

So first of all, fasting does help your heart. Yes, it prevents from heart diseases and it can also cut cancer risk.. woohoo.. But yes, not a long term fast. Just sufficient enough to rejuvenate your system.but but  but..fasting for weight loss..Its just a type of yo yo dieting.It wont help you loose weight.Side effects of fasting include dizziness, headaches, low blood sugar, muscle aches, weakness and fatigue. Prolonged fasting can lead to anemia, a weakened immune system, liver and kidney problems, and irregular heartbeat. Fasting can also result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, muscle breakdown, and diarrhoea.


My personal suggestion is instead of a fast, opt for a healthy eating plan that you can stick with long-term healthy diets provide a minimum of 1,200 calories and include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, along with regular physical activity.So next week we will be back again with some more interesting facts for you.
