Hello folks! Today on talk back Thursday we come with an interesting yet alarming topic “is old age really a problem?”.
The term old age gives a very prominent meaning to us “a person retarded from doing the normal things a man does or rather a physically, mentally and emotionally retarding boring phase of life”. Is that seriously the perfect definition. The internet defines old age as “Old age refers to ages nearing or surpassing the life expectancy of human beings, and is thus the end of the human life cycle.” Ahh. Too boring definition. I would rather like to define old age as “Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” . As work responsibilities abate, old age may be a time to explore hobbies and activities that there was no time for earlier in life.
A man’s life is divided into five stages namely: infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. In each, individual’s finds himself in different situations and faces different problems. Old age is viewed as an unavoidable , undesirable and problem ridden phase of life. Problems of aging usually appear after the age of 65 years. The elderly face physiological, psychological, social, economic and emotional problems.
The major causes of the problems faced by elderly are due to health factor, neglect by family member, generation gap, and financial factor.Although older people’s brains slow down, experience and knowledge more than make up for it.
Still young people often have this question on their mind: Why should I spend time listening to old people’s advice about how to live my life?
Some of the ways which I feel can help them combat this problem is:
At personal level, A number of old age problems can be prevented by taking precautions early in life. These are also called as precautionary measures.
- Keep fit in youth
- Develop hobbies
- Keep active even at old age
- Be financially Independent Even some legislative measures can be taken such as Provision to increase Involvement
- Proper Social Security Measures
- Prevention of Elder Abuse
- Old Age Homes and Financial Aid to NGOs
- National Old Age Pension Scheme
- more Annapurna Scheme
In the end, I come down on the side that the accumulated wisdom of older people — our “experts” on living — can serve as a helpful guide for younger people. They bring experiential knowledge of just about every problem a human being can go through. People from their teens to middle age will find that the road map for life elders provide can help them take a new look at their own situations and to choose new ways of living that will make them happier.
We just have to be willing to ask and listen.
This way my perspective and ideas. Please share in your ideas on how to combat this problem. Do you think that the elderly are a burden for us and society or they are the backbone of our society if treated properly and given adequate care? That’s all for today. Hope you enjoyed.
