Something to brighten up your average Thursday!

It’s the middle of August which means 2016 is almost over, shocking right? When did July end!? For me though, 2016 has been a bearer of bad news. The 2016 covered in news so far, hasn’t been very positive. Terrorist attacks, virus outbreaks, political unrest etc. are just some incidents covered in the international media. Closer home, we too are plagued with problems such as gender inequality, water scarcity, rising social inequality, etc. Every other week I try to highlight some advancement in the scientific world, well today, let’s talk about everything positive that has happened in 2016, so far.

This week on Talk Back Thursday, let’s discuss 16 Good news and encouraging trends that have happened in 2016.

In his latest video posted on the channel vlogbrothers,  Youtuber and Author John Green describes 2016 as ‘something of a dumpster fire’, but insists there is a lot of good news around the world. He says. “We tend to hear about the bad news a lot because it happens suddenly and it’s often dramatic, whereas good news usually happens slowly.” Some of them include:

  1. Child mortality is declining.
  2. The West Africa Ebola virus outbreak that began in 2014 has ended.
  3. Tremendous progress has been made in the fight against malaria.
  4. Literacy rates are increasing, and the gender literacy gap is decreasing

Watch the full video to see what other good news are featured which includes science, health, world news, and pop culture. It is a video that will leave you smiling and optimistic about the future.

And that is what I want to discuss in this week’s Talk Back Thursday, why can’t we have an equal emphasis on the good and the bad in the world? Sure, the good news won’t sound as dramatic, but won’t it fuel some much needed optimism? Let me know what you think in the comments. Also, let us know what we should discuss in the Next Talk Back Thursday.
