SHOULD ANIMALS BE USED FOR SCIENTIFIC TESTING?

RIGHT NOW, MILLIONS OF MICE, RATS, RABBITS, PRIMATES, CATS, DOGS, AND OTHER ANIMALS ARE LOCKED INSIDE BARREN CAGES IN LABORATORIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THEY LANGUISH IN PAIN, ACHE WITH LONELINESS, AND LONG TO BE FREE. INSTEAD ALL THEY CAN DO IS SIT AND WAIT IN FEAR OF THE NEXT TERRIFYING AND PAINFUL PROCEDURE THAT WILL BE PERFORMED ON THEM.

All the medications, products designed for human use, biomedical, commercial and health care use, till date, are being tested on these poor organisms who actually cannot speak up. We humans are (sorry to be rude) but way too selfish and for our benefits are practising this since 500 BC, wherein, an estimated 26 million animals are being tested every year.

The proponents of animal testing say it has established life saving treatments and there isn’t any alternative method for researching a complete organism but the opponents( me being one) say that, it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on those poor creatures, and those being so different from us can lead to misleading results as was seen in THALIDOMIDE TEST (a peculiar drug which caused 10,000 birth defects as extensive animal testing had failed to predict any hazard and this drug was made available based on animal testing data).

Animal testing is regulated by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) passed in 1966. The US Department of Agriculture reports the number of animals used for research till date.

Pros are:

  • contributes to life-saving cures
  • no alternative present for  testing complete living system
  • similar in some ways
  • have short life span, so are better subjects
  • research is highly regulated which doesn’t harm them much

Cons are:

  • inhumane and cruel
  • in vitro, micro-dosing techniques are the alternatives
  • poor test results, which can be misleading
  • more expensive

Animals also suffer just like humans, so better test on yourself than doing the-so-called SPECIESISM. God has entrusted us with the responsibility to rule over and be dominant over other creations but unfortunately we, being superior, are misusing this duty. Let us just give a thought to this in our busy schedules. This was all for this week..

Send in your reviews about the post and any specific topic you want for the coming week. Thank you.

Hi, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have a story and a few dimensions to share. This is going to be long, so don’t bother reading unless you’ve 5 mins to spare.

“We breed diseases, we combat diseases, what die to save us from our own demons, are a bunch of rodents and beagles in a cage.”

Back in MSc 1st year (if my memory serves me right), I had witnessed the rabbits and rats in a cage, and after feeding them, subjecting them to days of mental and physical torture and finally executing them by pulling their tail hard and disconnecting the brain-spine connection, which is apparently the least painful way, I had similar thoughts to yours. I was infact so outraged that I envisioned myself running a campaign against the world who do and sponsor these animal trials. That was of-course childish.
There are a few dimensions to this discussion which I figured eventually and which I’d like to share.
Firstly, there is an “under development” alternative to animal trials that is being developed. Tissue culture. Drugs are tested on cell lines and tissues (e.g tissues that can fully develop into a liver). Again, this is tideous and expensive.

Drowned in emotions, we do not entirely realise the importance of new life saving medicines into the market.
What I am saying is, I might give 10 extra healthy years, or even a permanant relief to my beloved with one tablet that caused pain and sacrifice to 50 animals.
It is ofcourse difficult to justify (and hence an unending debate of animal lovers vs neutrals and innovator pharma folks) whether one human life is more important than 50 animal lives (Realistically, several human lives for a few animal lives), and these several humans are mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers and lovers to somebody. Ahh, emotions, you see?
If there’s a situation where you’re involved (Godforbid you won’t be), but IF, where, your best person on Earth has a terminal illness and no medicine for it, and a determination that you’d do anything to save him/her, will you still let 50 animals live and one beloved suffer and die?
Boils down to importance of human life and basic emotion – care. But it still isn’t so simple and part of me is still on your side.
I despise the scenario because we are by large responsible for diseases caused to us. AIDS, Cancer, dengue, and number of diseases increasing after World War. The synthetic shit we take in for a convenient urban life. Then we try to save ourselves by killing animals.

Our ignorance is outliving everyone, and one day it will outlive us too.
Much evolved and smart, aren’t we?

Thanks again for writing and sharing the article.
